INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE (ENGLISH)
General Information The profession of Interior Architecture aims at designing original interior spaces (e.g. residential, office, historical, and commercial buildings) by using scientific and artistic principles and relevant contemporary technologies, and also considering the issues of comfort, ergonomics, economy, physical, psychological, and social characteristics of users. In other words, Interior Architecture is a discipline that designs interior spaces in terms of functionality and aesthetics by considering user demands and spatial features. Within this context, the profession of Interior Architecture improves the life quality of humans and contributes to the artistic and cultural development of a society. The Department of Interior Architecture has been established within the Faculty of Fine Arts and Design of Cyprus Science University in 2020. The main mission of the Department is to educate and train qualified interior architects who are critical thinkers, research oriented, innovative, creative with a holistic approach to problem solving, and have artistic and the necessary skills in using modern technologies. An integral aspect of this mission is to make sure that the graduates of the program have not only high degree of awareness about social and environmental issues but also high ethical standards. The language of education is English. The Department of Interior Architecture offers an undergraduate Bachelor’s Degree program, which is a 4-years program - consisting of eight semesters. The Department aims at being a centre of excellence and a leading academic institution within the framework of providing a high quality of education and developing strong cooperation in the fields of artistic and scientific practices at national and international level. Graduates of the Interior Architecture Department receive a ‘Bachelor’s Degree’ and earn the title of ‘Interior Architect’. Teaching Methods The Department Interior Architecture follows a holistic approach to designing interior spaces by using science, art, and technology. The Department interacts with a range of professional disciplines such as architecture, landscape architecture, psychology and sociology. Therefore, the quality of education is based on the interdisciplinary approach. The Undergraduate Program of Interior Architecture consists of theory and practice. The design studios are at the heart of the education program. The design studios start in the first year of the education and last for four years. The main aim of the design studies is to help the students to design their original projects, to develop an ability to take a part in teamwork, and to strengthen the educational process in cooperation with other departments of the Faculty of Fine Arts and Design (e.g. architecture). In addition, the students take some other courses (e.g. building materials, drawing and presentation techniques, ergonomics, furniture design, and interior landscape design) that contributes to the quality of education. Opportunities for Academic Progress Graduates of the Interior Architecture Department may pursue an academic career by continuing postgraduate programs (Master and Doctorate).
Career Opportunities Graduates of the Interior Architecture Department can work as an interior architect/designer for public and private sectors (e.g. construction companies and furniture manufacturers) and/or can establish their own businesses.
