Objectives and Contents
Objectives of the Course Unit Enhance Aviation-Specific English Proficiency: To improve students' proficiency in English with a specific focus on vocabulary, terminology, and phraseology used in the aviation industry. Communication Skills in Aviation Contexts: To develop effective communication skills essential for pilots, air traffic controllers, and other aviation professionals in international and multicultural environments. Listening and Comprehension Skills: To enhance listening skills, particularly in understanding various accents and speech rates commonly encountered in aviation communications. Radio Telephony Communication: To master radio telephony etiquette, standard phraseology, and procedures for VFR (Visual Flight Rules) and IFR (Instrument Flight Rules) operations. Safety and Emergency Communication: To equip students with the language skills required for handling emergency situations, safety instructions, and unexpected occurrences during flight operations. ICAO Language Proficiency Requirements: To prepare students for ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) English language proficiency tests, aiming to achieve at least level 4 standards.
Contents of the Course Unit Aviation Vocabulary and Terminology: Introduction to specialized vocabulary including aircraft parts, airport facilities, weather, and navigation. Standard Radio Telephony Phraseology: Practice and simulations of standard radio communications, including ATC (Air Traffic Control) instructions, pilot reports, and readback/hearback procedures. Listening Comprehension Exercises: Engaging with real-world aviation communication scenarios, including live ATC feeds and recorded pilot-ATC interactions. Role-Play Scenarios: Simulated flight and ATC scenarios to develop practical communication skills in operational contexts. Emergency and Safety Communications: Language training for handling emergency situations, including mayday and pan-pan calls, and communication of critical safety information. Cultural Awareness in Aviation: Understanding and respecting linguistic and cultural diversity in international aviation contexts. Preparation for ICAO Language Proficiency Tests: Specific training sessions aimed at the ICAO language proficiency requirements and test-taking strategies.
