Objectives and Contents
Objectives of the Course Unit Designed to introduce the freshman to the language of nursing, critical thinking, the essential academic skills for incoming students and the interpersonal skills required for success in the nursing profession. This course is designed to help novice nursing students develop knowledge and competencies required to provide evidence-based, comprehensive basic nursing care for patients, using nursing process approach.
Contents of the Course Unit This course serves as an overview to the scientific principles of nursing and the individual as a holistic adaptive system. This course introduces the beginning nursing student to the concepts and skills of nursing (bio/psycho/social/spiritual concepts) including the timeline of nursing, the historical development and current status of nursing in Turkey, nursing philosophy, nursing theories, health care system, professionalism, scope and standards of practice with key concepts related to the code of ethics.
Contribution of the Course Intending to Provide the Professional Education Develop self-management and academic skills necessary for academic and professional success. Identify and apply the principles of self-care related to body, mind, and spirit. Describe the role of the nurse as provider of patient-centered care, member of a profession, patient safety advocate, and member of the healthcare team. Discuss the components of clinical reasoning, decision making, communication, and evidence-based practice and how a nurse uses these tools to provide comprehensive, efficient, safe, high quality care for patients. Explain the importance of accountability for optimal nursing care, legal and ethical standards, lifelong learning, cultural competence, professional development, promoting the nursing profession and participating as a citizen in our society.
