Objectives and Contents
Objectives of the Course Unit This practicum provides the student with the opportunity to build on acquired knowledge and skills from the fundamentals of nursing practicum and to practice and develop skills in other areas, including administration of medications, care plans, patient and family education, and the role of the practical nurse in providing care for medical-surgical patients. Basic medical-surgical nursing care is directed toward the adult in the sub-acute settings in this practicum.
Contents of the Course Unit This course will further the students’ understanding of working within a healthcare environment as they learn the skills required to provide patient-centered care. The summer practice (in total 20 working days) provides academic knowledge and laboratory experiences for students to develop clinical skills essential in medical and surgical nursing. Medical Nursing: clinical experience focuses on the evaluation, diagnosis, and management of acute and chronic inpatient medical conditions. Students will perform complete inpatient history and physical exams, assist with consultations, and evaluate and manage hospitalized patients from admission to discharge. Students will be taught how to perform and interpret diagnostic tests commonly utilized in inpatient medicine and to perform common clinical hospital procedures. Students will also be involved with inpatient hospital documentation to include the admission summary, history and physical examination, daily progress note, consultation note, and discharge summary. Surgical Nursing: students will participate in pre-operative and post-operative patient care, outpatient evaluation of surgical candidates, surgical inpatient management, assisting with surgical techniques and cases, and documentation specific to surgical patients. Students will be exposed to common surgical procedures and the description, indications, contraindications, and complications of each. Students will also participate in interpreting diagnostic tests utilized in the general surgical environment and in understanding operating room protocol.
Contribution of the Course Intending to Provide the Professional Education Apply leadership concepts, skills, and decision-making in the provision of high-quality nursing care, healthcare team coordination, and the oversight and accountability for safe care delivery in a variety of settings. Practice and/or coordinate, at the level of the baccalaureate prepared nurse, to plan and/or implement patient centered care. Will focus on the application of concepts involved in maintaining or restoring health of patients with medical and surgical conditions in the acute care/hospital setting. Applies the nursing process to the adult patient experiencing common health conditions requiring medical and surgical interventions, including acute and chronic conditions.
