Objectives and Contents
Objectives of the Course Unit This practicum provides the student with the opportunity to build on acquired knowledge and skills from previous nursing practica and to practice and develop skills in other areas, including administration of medications, care plans, patient and family education, and the role of the practical nurse in providing care for obstetrics/gynecology and pediatric patients. In addition, providing antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum care of pregnant women, demonstrating competency on how to do a vaginal delivery under supervision.
Contents of the Course Unit This course will further the students’ understanding of working within a healthcare environment as they learn the skills required to provide patient-centered care. The summer practice (in total 30 workdays) provides academic knowledge and laboratory experiences for students to develop clinical skills essential in obstetrics/gynecology, and pediatric nursing. Women’s Health Nursing: emphasis will be on eliciting and performing the obstetrics/gynecology history and physical examination, screening techniques, diagnostic procedures, management plans, and contraceptive counseling and management. Focus will also be on pre- and postnatal care, menstrual abnormalities, infertility, sexuality issues, menopause, and sexually transmitted diseases. Pediatric Nursing: students will participate in the care of patients ranging from neonates to adolescents. Focus of experience is recognizing the clinical presentation of common pediatric medical problems, developing differential diagnoses, formulating diagnoses, and designing management plans for these patients. Other areas of focus include clinical application of drug dosing, immunizations, growth and developmental milestones, common diagnostic procedures, nutritional assessment, and documentation and communication with parents and pediatric patients.
Contribution of the Course Intending to Provide the Professional Education Apply leadership concepts, skills, and decision-making in the provision of high-quality nursing care, healthcare team coordination, and the oversight and accountability for safe care delivery in a variety of settings. Practice and/or coordinate, at the level of the baccalaureate prepared nurse, to plan and/or implement patient-centered care. Will focus on the application of concepts involved in maintaining or restoring health of patients within the acute care/hospital setting. Applies the nursing process to the pediatric and adult patient experiencing common health conditions requiring interventions, including acute and chronic conditions.
