Objectives of the Course Unit | Given the rapid increase in knowledge and availability of major surgery and other forms of treatment and of palliation, nurses require specialist educational preparation in order to provide that quality of care to the cancer patient and their families. This course will introduce nurses to essential concepts in oncology nursing practice and provide fundamental information to those who work with oncology patients. |
Contents of the Course Unit | Developments in scientific knowledge and advances in technology, coupled with increased patient knowledge about their disease and its treatment have led to an increase in the public’s expectation in relation to cancer care. This course will introduce nursing students to the art and science of oncology nursing practice. Given the increasing complexity of this growing patient population, caring for people with cancer and their families involves a particular set of advanced skills and knowledge. This course aims to increase a student’s theoretical knowledge of the disease process and treatment of cancer. It will examine the concepts of epidemiology, etiology and pathology of cancer along with contemporary and emerging treatment modalities and their effects. |
Contribution of the Course Intending to Provide the Professional Education | This course will further the students’ understanding of working within a multidisciplinary healthcare environment as they learn the skills required to provide patient-centered care to meet the demands imposed by the dynamic and complex nature of cancer and its management, and the often devastating effect of the diagnosis of cancer on patients and their families. |
