Objectives of the Course Unit | To describe the philosophy and principles of hospice and palliative care that can be integrated across settings to affect quality care at end-of-life. This course aims to use an evidence based and person-centered approach to optimize the provision of safe, therapeutic and reassuring palliative care to patients with life limiting conditions and their families. |
Contents of the Course Unit | This course is designed to offer nursing students the information and skills needed to provide high quality palliative care to patients with serious illnesses. It addresses the assessment and management of current challenges in palliative care, including the physical, psychological, social, and spiritual/existential sources of suffering experienced by patients and their families. |
Contribution of the Course Intending to Provide the Professional Education | Identify the influence of culture on end-of-life and palliative care issues. Identify the need for collaboration with team members when implementing palliative care. Assess physical, psychological, social, and spiritual needs and interventions for a dying patient and their family. Discuss an understanding of grief and loss relating to complex or traumatic death. |
